Our Process
How Your Remodel Comes Together, Step by Step
From the first conversation to the final walkthrough, here's what to expect when you remodel with Bay Design + Remodel. No guesswork.
Five Steps
A Transparent Remodeling Process
Select a step to see what happens, what you'll receive, and how you can help it go smoothly.
-
What happens
We talk through what you'd like to change, how you use the space, your rough budget range, and your ideal timing. If it's a good fit, we schedule a visit to see the home in person.
What you'll receive
- A clear sense of whether your project is a fit
- Next steps and what we'll need from you
Your role
Share photos, inspiration, and anything you already know about the home.
-
What happens
We walk the spaces with you, take measurements, and assess existing conditions such as finishes, fixtures, plumbing, electrical, and access. Together we define the scope: what's included, what's optional, and what needs design or engineering.
What you'll receive
- A documented project scope
- Identified permit, design, or engineering needs
- Early guidance on selections
Your role
Be candid about priorities and must-haves versus nice-to-haves.
-
What happens
We prepare a written proposal describing the work, allowances for selections, payment schedule, and an estimated schedule. We review it with you line by line and adjust the scope if needed before anything is signed.
What you'll receive
- A written proposal and contract
- An estimated project schedule
- A selections list with deadlines
Your role
Review carefully, ask questions, and finalize selections on time.
-
What happens
We protect your home, coordinate permits and inspections, and manage trades and materials. You'll get regular progress updates and a clear point of contact. Any change in scope is priced and approved in writing before the work proceeds.
What you'll receive
- Regular progress updates
- Written change orders for any scope changes
- Inspections coordinated with your city
Your role
Keep us informed of household schedules and respond to decisions promptly.
-
What happens
We walk the finished project with you, note any punch-list items, and complete them. We'll also share care information for new finishes and fixtures so everything looks its best for years.
What you'll receive
- A completed punch list
- Care and maintenance information
- Final documentation for your records
Your role
Walk the space with us and point out anything that doesn't look right.
Homeowner FAQ
Questions Homeowners Ask Before Remodeling
How much will my remodel cost?
Every home and scope is different, so we don't quote prices over the phone. After discovery, you'll receive a detailed written proposal based on your actual scope and selections.
Who handles permits and inspections?
We identify permit requirements during discovery and coordinate permit applications and inspections with your city as part of the project.
What happens if something unexpected is found during construction?
Older homes sometimes hide surprises behind walls. If we find something that changes the scope, we stop, explain the options (including bringing in a licensed specialist if it's outside our scope), and provide a written change order for your approval before proceeding.
Can you work with my architect or designer?
Yes. We're happy to build from plans you already have, or to coordinate with a designer or engineer when your project needs one.
Which cities do you serve?
We're based in Walnut Creek and primarily serve Walnut Creek, Concord, Pleasant Hill, Clayton, Danville, and Lafayette. Contact us about projects in nearby cities.
Is Bay Design + Remodel licensed?
Yes. We hold a California B-2 Residential Remodeling license (CSLB #1141294), which covers remodeling of existing homes. You can verify the license status on the CSLB website.
Do you build additions, ADUs or structural changes?
No. Our B-2 Residential Remodeling license covers improvements to existing homes. We don't build additions or ADUs, and we don't alter load-bearing walls, foundations or roof structures. For that kind of work, we'll recommend you hire a licensed general building contractor.
